Quantum Dot Film

Quantum Dot Enhancement Film (QDEF) represents a leap forward in display color technology. This advanced film is layered within the backlight unit and is filled with billions of nano-scale semiconductor crystals known as "quantum dots." The magic of these dots is their ability to absorb light of one color and re-emit it at a different, very specific color, with incredible purity. The color they emit is determined precisely by their size. In a typical QDEF setup for an LCD, a blue LED backlight is used. The blue light passes through the film, exciting the quantum dots. The larger dots emit pure red light, while the smaller dots emit pure green light. The original blue light passes through unchanged. This combination of highly pure red, green, and blue light creates the backlight for the LCD panel. The result is a display with a vastly expanded color gamut, capable of reproducing a much wider and more accurate range of colors than traditional white LED backlights. This technology allows displays to cover more than 90% of the Rec. 2020 color space, leading to colors that are more vibrant, saturated, and true to life.
